Your Sunday Ride (April 20th, 2008)
Well, what a turn of events. For the last 2-3 months, I have been ramping up my mileage from about 150-180 miles/week to about 250 miles/week, incorporated some "hill" (OK, this IS FL), and did some intervals to gain strength aiming for this 170 mile Bike Across FL ride that was supposed to happen today. I did not only want to finish it under the 11 hr cut off (I know I can do that now), but I wanted to finish it feeling well and well under the 10 hr mark including breaks and such. I was right on target with things until I got an email from the organizers a week ago saying they had cancelled it and that it could be in Oct. Some of the obviously upset riders went ahead and organized their own ride for today following the same route, but as much as I wanted to go I couldn't as I could not find a way to get back once we got there. Everybody has their own support vehicle for this. Oh well. As an even more sour note, the organizer Rick Flohr, is refusing to refund the sign up fee ($175). Needless to say, there is an investigation in the local county's sherifs office, multiple complains to all the involved sponsors, a lawsuit in small claims court from me, and even serious complains to the Children's Miracle Network, which this ride was supposed to be benefiting.
Yesterday I decided to amend DGASMD's first rule of cycling from "I ride alone or with me myself, and I only" to "I will ride with some people I know once in a while, but no more frequent than once per month". In honor of such event, I rode 75 miles from Vero Beach, FL to Juno Beach. Couple of reasons. I had ordered a new frame in a shop there and it had just come in, so I needed to bring my current bike in to strip most components for the build up. Second reason is I had a friend I work with that wanted to ride there, so I went along. Beautiful ride, awesome weather, nice social pace, and as a reward at the end I got to see the frame ordered. No ride for me today as I am back to riding a long ride on sunday and no ride on saturday. Reversed today for obvious reasons.
Hope you had a great ride.
