The setting allows you to fine tune the width of your pedaling stroke. There is a term for that width but I don't remember it now. I find that the narrower of the two settings is preferable for me. The toe in should be adjusted by your cleat position on your shoe. If you toe in too much you will lose the benefit of the pedal float. You should try it both ways and see what works best for you.
