I'm thinking that 'hybrid tires' means a semi-slick or an inverted tread, as opposed to a 700c knobbie. Do it! I had slicks for my last mountain bike because it was mostly for commuting. Slicks rolled a little smoother and quieter, but they weren't any faster. Maybe the fact that they were 26x2.0 had something to do with that, though...
