The hubs are actually very smooth and easy to service, it's just that the front bearings seem to go well before their time. Mine started grinding with 25 miles left to go in a century last year. Just the movement from putting the bike up on a stand will make the rear wheel spin forever (no exaggerating - I've tied mine down sometimes or it's just "click, click, click, click" of the pawls).
