Caution While at the top of Old La Honda
I saw this thread on the AltoVelo mailing list. Just letting everyone know:
Several years ago some friends warned me about standing at the top of
Old La Honda after finishing the climb. Their reasoning: northbound
motorcyclists and motorists speeding around the corner may misjudge
the corner--then plow right through anyone standing at the top of Old
LaHonda. Ever since then, I either proceed immediately right up
Skyline to 84 or, if I'm waiting, I cross Skyline and wait on the west
side of Skyline.
Yesterday, as I came to the top of Old La Honda at ~12:45pm, I came
upon 3 fire engines, 2 ambulances, and several police cars. They were
pulling a person (living, but injured) up from the ravine on the
northeast corner of the intersection. Then they were looking at the
skid marks in precisely the same location at the top of the hill where
cyclists always stand. Evidently, it looked like this motorcyclist
misjudged the corner and flew right over the top into the ravine 10
feet below.
Fortunately, I don't think there were any cyclists standing on the top
at the time (from what I could see arriving after the fact).
Be very careful at the top of Old La Honda! (You may want to make a
habit out carefully crossing skyline and waiting on the opposite side.)
