The shift at the brifter only moves the rear derailer. The chain doesn't move over and engage the cog until you start pedaling. Sram always seemed like there was less of a pedal stroke movement before the chain was engaged on the desired gear, which is probably why I felt it shifted better under "load" - such as going up a steep hill.
That would likely be due to it having a missing tooth on each cog.
