I bought the cheapest Polar HR Monitor about 4-5 years ago and it still works perfect. The more expensive ones give more data but I have a powertap and I just use it to give me a HR so I can keep my powertap display on cadence.

I think I paid $40-50 for it but it has stood the test of time (can't believe the batteries have lasted this long).
