I've learned not to bother trying to explain fixed-gear to most people.
Recent example of a conversation I had with a guy at school who has done some triathlons and such.
Me: So I heard you are into riding?
Him: Yeah, not as much these days but I used to do triathlons. You?
M: Yeah, I ride a fixed-gear bike
H: Oh, cool. Where is it fixed, in the middle?
M: ....???
I explained to him what I meant, but I still have no idea what he might have been talking about.
I also have learned to practice trackstands unclipped until you really get the hang of them - when I was first learning them I was practicing in the park nearby, and just fell straight over sideways with my feet in the clips. I went to wash off my bloody shins at the water fountain, and a couple old Polish women who saw me fall gave me some disinfectant wipes. Which reminds me of the other thing I've learned - thank goodness for old Polish women.
