A cheap titanium bike may actually be harsher and heavier than a similarly priced aluminum bike from your local bike shop.

I've got a high end steel bike, a high end Ti bike, and a high end CF bike, all with relatively the same geometry. Except for the CF having a very stiff bb and the Ti having stiff rear stays (I spec'd larger diameter tubs for the stays), all three ride very close. That makes me believe frame geometry has much more to do with ride characteristics than the material.
