Lot of variables that can impact it. Simplified version is that it will re-route in an attempt to get you to the next logical waypoint on the route.
Coupled with random crashing, re-routing you back to the start, or dropping the route entirely (see posts above). If it re-routes you, be sure to pay attention and make sure your route still looks correct onscreen.
