Aeropress is my favorite coffee maker home and on the road, compact, and VERY durable. It does use a bit more coffee then a french press, but it makes the smoothest coffee in the world, trust me!
It basically makes a couple of shots of espresso-like "coffee concentrate" I use hotter water than their instructions call for, just below boiling, a fine grind is critical, and of course a good bean (yemen is my favorite). Add some more hot water (or drink straight) and enjoy.
They only cost about $30, I bought mine of thinkgeek.com a couple of years ago, but I have seen them at the local brew house. I do not leave home without mine, and I haven't plugged a coffee machine in at home for about a year, I use it daily, and have gotten all of my friends hooked on them.
The only problem I have with it is that it takes a little experimentation on the right ratio of water to coffee, and that can change with the bean..
