I ride 40km a day and I hit the gym 4 times a week for weight training.
The resistance and endurnace training are two different things and if you can do both, you should. Resistance training with weights will make you a better rider and you can't beat it for over-all health benefits.
I haven't lost or gained any weight in years so I can't comment on that.
