How much does the float of the speedplay's help? I ask because I actually dislocated my left knee playing football in college (2005). My knee has recovered great and I do everything I used to do, but I am thinking that maybe the speedplays or other pedals with float would be better suited for me over strict road pedals in the long run. Float is great -- as a matter of fact, that's why I switched to them and I'm not going back. Because of the way my legs are shaped, I can ride LOOK type pedals only if the cleats are adjusted in extreme positions. If I'm not super careful about getting my cleats
exactly right, the pain is excruciating.
Frogs and speedplays have significantly more float than other systems. The best way to find out if you actually need the float (other than to ride for a long time and learn from experience) is to have them set you up on a trainer at a shop and watch you pedal. Whatever system you get, be sure to adjust the cleats properly. Otherwise, you're in for a world of hurt.
