I'm currently riding 2-3 days per week on a mountain bike with a rear rack. It's working very well and I'm considering switching to a single-speed road bike I can buy from a friend. My only concern is that there are no rear-dropout eyelets for fenders or a rack (or space to braze one on). I'm ok with using p-clamps on the seat stays, but not sure about the rear dropout. I'll be carrying a laptop, clothes/shoes and lunch with me.

Any experiences with this? What worked well, or didn't work at all?
