The price is the same so who knows.
Triple chain rings versus double chain rings. The triple has a smaller chain ring that gives you easier gears for hills; whether you want that or not depends on how hilly your area is and what shape you're in.

If you're worried about what others think of you, you picked the right sport!

Thanks for all the help.
You can spend $400 on shoes alright but there's certainly no need to...I prefer Sidi's but even the less expensive ones are pricy. Check out what your LBS has and try some on (maybe they'll give you a discount if you buy a bike and shoes). There are lots of options for pedals as well. I use Look Keo's on my road bikes...the Keo Classics are reasonably priced. Keo's are single sided entry though...a lot of beginners prefer double sided...Speedplay, for example, or one of the mountain bike systems like SPD or Eggbeaters...I prefer the latter if you go the mountain bike pedal route.
