I have two SS-bikes, both ghetto bikes cheaply built from old geared bikes. One mtb one racer. One more old mtb on the way. I enjoy the building part much, making an old bucket gear bike become something really usable and enjoyable is a kick. The other part is that the focus is completely moved to the ride, not the equipment. I even removed the bike computer. I love both bikes and if I ever get the cash to buy a better bike it will most likely be a new fixed superlight racer.
