If I'm w/in 75% of the speed limit, I take the lane (unless I have a great shoulder available). You'll still have people turn right in front of you. urbanknight is correct though... treat every vehicle as if they're going to do this. You'll learn to associate an upcoming drive/intersection on the right with the vehicle sounds behind you on the left.
