Besides, I learned orienteering the "old school" way, with map and compass and it'll be a cold day before I rely on a GPS as my sole means of navigation. My compass has never run out of batteries and my map has never failed to sync with a satellite. I think GPS makes a fine backup but it's no substitute for the old school. If I were a sailor I'd still be using a sextant.
agreed. it's fine technology, but something i've got no need or desire to use.

that said: a lot of the local guys use them around here, not as a navigational, but a mapping tool for the maze-like trail systems in some spots. so i've got to be thankful for that, since many of the maps i've ended up using have come from their gps data...
