I frequently ride mountains/hills/mole holes and often in the rain so it was one of the best bicycle-related decisions for me...

But disc brakes would be useless in a flat and dry riding area. "Horses for courses."
This is pretty much my opinion on discs. I rode 'em for a winter in Seattle, they were great - clean and consistent braking - but I don't miss them now that I'm here in the Midwest and I don't ride in rain anymore.
I don't think the Avid Road disc brakes are that great. My theory is that the reduced cable pull for road brakes results in a brake that is more sensitive to cable/housing deflection. My Avid Road discs worked fine for me when I set them up close, but I could easily squeeze the levers to the bars - it's just that the brakes were so effective that I didn't need to squeeze that far to get good stopping power.
I think it would be nice if Shimano would come out with a long-pull STI variant, and we could just use V-brakes or MTB calipers or whatever. I think it would be great for commuter and cyclocross bikes.
