I do all of this for fun. Even the gnarly Road Nazi hammerfests and races. You gotta do what works for you. I am now, and will probably remain, a total and complete MTB Fred.
I've been thinking about the "MTB Fred" thing and have decided that it doesn't exist, at least in my mind. MTBing is really "run what you brung" and "wear what you dare" so there are no real rules to break. We may get a little bent out of shape when someone asks us what they think of a $99 full suspension bike from the local X-mart, but that's more out of safety and durability concerns.
