I don't think we have to be martyrs on the roads as kamikaze proponents for bicycling growth.
There is nothing wrong with some safe riding to preserve oneself for meeting family, professional and personal obligations.
I ride in a county park (Flatwoods Park, Tampa, Fl.)that is a loop for cyclists and rollerbladers where we don't have to worry about cars or trucks. There is some fast cycling training going on there, too.
