I'll throw my .02 in. I'm building up a Surly Long Haul Trucker right now. With careful shopping I should come in right at about $1000.00. Of course, I'm building everything including the wheels. CR18 Suns for 25 bucks a hoop, XT hubs, db spokes... If you don't want to build, or aren't a mechanic, then find a good lbs that will do a package deal, or go mail order.
