I replaced a 105 with an XTR (front) on my old road bike with STI. The XTR actually gave crisper shifts. That's possibly because I was using a mountain bike crankset, I don't know. I would be using that old XTR on my new bike (vice the 105 or the ultegra I've got on order) except for the seat tube diameter mismatch.
