If you're not in too much of a hurry, you can stop halfway through the housing to let it cool down a bit. I find that if I cut all the way through too fast the melty plastic will tear a little on the last bit of the cut.
An awl works great to even out the inner plastic liner, sometimes it will melt closed too. Usually I finish off the cut with a little bevel in the outer plastic by running the cut end over the flat surface of the cutoff wheel to help with getting those end caps on.
