I believe that's a shifter cable, but yes, it is quite intimidating.

To the OP- Do whatever you want, but make sure you'll actually ride it for a significant amount of time in that state. I converted my old Trek and will be keeping it fixed for a long, long time because I greatly appreciate its simplicity and live in an area that's conducive to fixed riding. If you're converting it because you actually want to ride fixed, do it. If you're converting it just cuz, that's unfortunate.
