I have a roll-top, and I love it. However, I'll agree with [jbucky] here - the regular 'messenger style' seems to be more backpack-type minded. It's not as wide as the roll-top. On the roll-top I have to really stick my head out to either side when checking for cars (I have the medium / Ivan). Chrome should have a picture of their messenger pack with a bunch of stuff loaded in it also. Also, the roll-top does have a hip strap, but what I've found is that they can be useless unless they really fit around your hips, if you get a smaller size this usually requires lowering the shoulder straps a bit, which I [personally] can't stand.
