The problem is 650c wheels, they are PITA to deal with when they break. Shops don't carry them often, there's about 3 to 4 shops around here that even carries 650x20-25c tubes, and for the wheels, they have to order them, it doesn't make sense to have them in stock.
For your next bike, I recommend a Specialized, as they are among the few companies out there making a bike that's 44cm and yet fits a 700c wheel, I believe Colnago also makes small sizes that fits a 700c.
