Because I'd have to wait for the cars in front of me to move. When I'm #1 off to the right of the lane, I can be moving before the first guy even realizes it's green. That's part of the advantage of filtering to the front: you can use the slow RT of the first driver to get clipped in and off running before he realizes it's green. I agree that there isn't much delay if I'm getting in line in reality, but the perception by the drivers is that it's a huge inconvenience (as evidenced by their yelling and honking), when really it's probably faster than if there was a mom in a minivan on a cell phone in front of them.
