Best guys locally train by feel. But they've been at it 15+ years and are hyper-sensitive to the sensations coming from their body pre and post-ride. I think for the first couple of years just ride as much as possible, start doing group rides and maybe some club races.

It's those middle years, once you plateau from the "ride lots" philosophy, where you'll need some structure and a coach can really help. I'm probably gonna pony up for a power meter next year and invest in a coach.

All that said, if you go out and absolutely rip it up as much as possible, eat well, and rest a lot (including recovery weeks), you'll probably max out your potential!
