1. Cycling in many parts of the US exposes you to a not insignificant danger every time you ride. Motorists are dumb, insulting, and at times dangerous.
2. A newbie doesn't want to be slogging up a climb trying to control a bike while cars zip by.

4. I know plenty of people who just don't want to be trapped miles from home on a machine they're unfamiliar with if/when they have mechanical trouble.
5. Even the charity rides suffer from the presence of hyper-competitive idiots who want to turn everything into a race. They're usually there because they can't hang in a REAL race and ruin the experience for those who understand it's just for fun.
This comment just breaks my heart. This is what gets cyclists stereotyped as elitists. I think it's downright poisonous (and bordering on racism) for anyone in any sport to take pride in the idea that only rich people from a certain ethnicity can or should participate.
I have a bad taste in my throat now.
