Steel = more forgiving ride, alloy = lighter weight, snappy acceleration, rigid ride.
Only for racing, lighter = less durable. Not as important if you race for cash, and sponsors pay for your bike.
Road gets you more hand positions, able to tuck into headwinds. Downside is modern components are more expensive to replace.
