How can a candidate address them and still win? I think the candidate would have to talk about making changes in a quality of life neutral or by using examples like me- improved quality of life direction. But they candidate would have to be able to paint a mental image of living in a good life in a low carbon future. Just read the reactions we get on this forum when we assert that our lives have improved by going car free- we get falsely accused of being weirdos who enjoy deprivation or being sadists who abuse our loved ones. No politician can get elected by even hinting at sacrifice. How did Bush tell us to fight terrorism? Max out your credit card at the mall. It worked, he got re-elected. So, what is the script that a candidate should use to address energy issues in a realistic manner? Can a candidate mention bikes and car free living and still get elected?
