Wouldn't privilege play a part in both. Radical embracing of one's desires (hedonism) necessitates a separation from the (presumptive) predominate conservative culture; as well as a means to sustain that separation.
Willingly playing into and capitalizing on a traditional role assumes that the cultural setting allows for the privilege without persecution. Compare a plantation owner's wife and a slave woman in the 19th century, American South. Both, largely by necessity would play into their respective role. One will have a privileged life and the other will not.
It must feel exhilarating reciting your textbook from college even thought you have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. God I love making fun of pseudo-intellectuals.
