1. 8 or 9 drive side spokes - with 12mm threading...not 10mm threading.
2. 16 or 18 opposite side spokes - with 12mm threading.
3. All spokes 1.8 (15 guage). Do not use 2.0 (14g).
4. Lace up opposite side first. No manipulation other than slight bending required. (2x or 3x)
5. Bend all the drive side spokes into a "U".
6. Lace the drive side spokes every other hole inside-out-pushing - not pulling. (Pretend 2x or 3x).
7. Go ahead and tension the wheel - the extra threading is so that you don't have to have the exact size spoke. Use el cheapo nipples that allow the spoke to poke through 2-3mm past the nipple just for more room.
8. Pop on freewheel tool lightly secured with QR.
9. Remove using a vise as is normal. Loosen QR once you have popped the freewheel a tad loose...

Works for me every time - and of course - if you are a shop - charge what you would charge for a wheelbuild - without the fine truing. It is a bit of work. I'll charge about 18.00 to 20.00 - somewhat less than my base charge of 27.00 for basic wheels.

Keep a lot of junk 15g spokes around for this kind of job in the future - I've done it myself about a dozen times since 1984. Used DT Swiss works the best...I never toss used DTs...I use em for the above and even for used wheels.
