A good choice
I think that the bike is a good choice for you in your situation, although there will always be a "better deal" out there on something at some time. The Synapse has won several "Bike of the Year" awards against others in its relative class. Cannondale describes the class as a "performance road or rider" cycle, not quite as aggressive as a full-out racing bicycle, but still enabling the rider to comfortably and quickly tackle most lengths of travel. The one you are looking at won an award as recently as 2007 in one of the UK cycling mags. This will be a comfortable bicycle, has very reliable components (will hold up for a cycling newcomer), has a comfortable geometry, and smooth ride quality. Like others said, I would try and get it for less if you can, but think that within 10% of that list price that you are looking at a deal that you will not regret. You could likely ride that bicycle for many years and it will serve you nicely. Good wishes on your decision and enjoy the ride with whatever you choose!
