I agree that Kool Kovers work fine, but all spd shoes aren't cheap or flexible. Sidi MTB shoes are the same as the road shoes except the tread on the sole as far as I can tell.

BTW: Of the many touring riders I saw on the TA last summer, not a single one used road shoes and cleats. The large majority were using SPD.
