Dude chowing heavily 1/2 hour beforehand -- not a good idea. I like something solid, carb-heavy about 3 to 4 hours beforehand and then a gel right before I start, like 5 minutes beforehand. During the race just a sugar drink w. electrolytes unless it's longer than 2 hours.
