Owning a silencer would be a pain. Assuming you purchase a nice silencer then you have to have a threaded barrel & threaded barrels are not the norm. That will cost $200- $450 dollars for a good barrel on semi-automatic pistol. Silencers cost $400 - $1000, & require maintenance due to heat build up. Lastly each state has different laws dealing with silencers, some states do not allow them at all, & in my home state local police have to sign-off the application. Carrying a silencer without the proper paperwork can get you into trouble particularly in any state where owning a silencer is illegal and/or you are a felon. Please see cut & paste FAQ text from a silencer manufacturer.

Contrary to popular belief, silencers are and always have been legal to own under federal law. At this time, the following states allow private ownership of silencers: AL, AR, AK, AZ, CO, CT, FL, GA, ID, IN, KY, LA, ME, MD, MS, MT, NE, NV, NH, NM, NC, OH, OK, OR, PA, SC, SD, TN, TX, UT, VA, WA, WI, and WY. Of the fifteen states that do not allow civilian ownership, CA, IA, KS, MA, MO, and MI allow Class 3 dealers and Class 2 manufacturers to possess silencers.

Silencers, like machine-guns, are regulated under the National Firearms Act (NFA) of 1934, and are regulated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms. The procedure for owning a silencer may seem daunting at first, but actually requires less paperwork than buying an automobile.

For the record I own 7 handguns, 3 shotguns, & 3 rifles by the way. Probably too many.
