Do Old Worn-out Tires Grip better?

It's my impression that my tires always grip a bit better when they are old, squared-off and just about worn out, as compared to the new tire that replaces them (assuming of course that the new tire is the same type/ size, etc.).

Maybe the rubber is a bit softer and grippy under the "tread layer" or maybe the constant "kneading" by the road has softened the rubber.

Has anyone else noticed this?
