I've had a similar experience of having the urge to help taken advantage of and still remember feeling like "it's time to buy a gun" (but I didn't).

Getting approached on the street I am usually really comfortable telling people no, but one time I was walking and 2 guys were going through garbage bags outside a restaurant. When they found something eatable they downed it on the spot. They didn't even ask for anything but I did leave each of them a little money and am really glad I did, no regrets about that one.

I won't go near most charities but have found a really good one where what you give gets through to the people that need it. I certainly don't appreciate the government trashing a big part of the money meant to help people.
