IMHO as long as it works you can tour on it. My main touring bike is a late 80's Giant Excursion with a few upgrades on it. I also do the occasional out and back or day long ramble on my 1972 Raleigh Superbe, and I have done a couple of B&B trips with it.

The upgrades on the Giant are drop bars and brifters, those may get replaced with bar ends before I am done...then again maybe not....

The Raleigh has a matching rack on the rear, just wasn't on there when the picture was taken.

My first long tour was on a mid 70's Motobecane Nomade it had 10 speeds! and an Schwinn Approved aluminum rack on the back. Prior to that most of my short weekend tours were done on my Schwinn Heavy Duty paper carrier bike, it had the baskets to carry stuff.
