Cat 4/5
Stage 1, 70mile RR
I went out too hard, body had trouble dealing with the higher altitude screwed with my heartrate/breathing pretty good. Lost contact with the lead group on the final climb, chased to minimize time loss, 19th down 32 secs.
Stage 2 TT (10miles, hilly)
Felt better, took 1st by 11 secs. Now 5th, down 21 secs.
Stage 3 Crit, (40 min)
Wet and slick as hell, crashes everywhere. Course dries out halfway through, I was able to hold the back of the pack and remain 5th, down 19 secs.
Stage 4 102 mile RR
Tried to be patient, reserve energy and not work. Ended up having to get up front anyway to help chase down a 2 man break that was up 1m30sec coming near the final 8 mile climb. Caught the break at the base of the mountain, 7 of us in the new break doing the battle-royal up to the finish line. 2 guys kept surging trying to break us all, wanted to quit and have the pain stop so many times. Held on, and sucked it up, took 4th for the stage.
and become the new GC by 18 secs!! Final got to stand on a Podium
Elkhorn is a great race. Baker City and the organizers do a top notch job of putting on this event.
