The bearings and seals are fine. It's the spindle that is worn.

Yeah, I tried out my girlfriend's Speedplays and really liked them. More stable in out-of-saddle efforts.

I'm pretty far from the limit at 142 lbs. However the wear is pretty severe. The spindles are now eliptical; almost a 1mm deficit where it's narrowest. I'm sure this is where the play comes from, but replacing the spindle will cost $160—the cost of a brand new stainless pedal.
