Actually lower tire pressure will give you better traction (and a less harsh ride). I rode a good deal on fire trails with 25 gatorskins. I ended up liking it so much that I got a geared cx bike. Just give it a try, nothing is going to explode.

Yes, that's what I was going for. With tires as narrow as the ones we use on our 700c wheels, lowering your tire pressure enough to actually noticeably gain traction will make the tires far more prone to "snake bites" (pinch flats).
