Heck, lord knows with a 15 month old and a working wife I slack off and take a car in to work occasionally. Last week I did 2 days in the car! Not cool, and I feel like crap for it, but it's pretty hard to live a car-free lifestyle and I fully admire those that do it all the way. So I, just like you, understand the need to utilize gas power occasionally. I've been thinking about getting a wee scooter for those days, actually. But, it's a toss-up: custom steel frame or scooter?
Anyhoo, you see my point?
I'm not trying to be a negative ninny, though I do tend to play Devil's Advocate and relish a good debate

I was just disappointed at the glory seekers yesterday. Made me feel kinda dirty...
Meh, the glory seekers are there with any sport or activity where attention is being paid. It just so happens that (it seems like) it's bicycling's turn now to be in the mainstream. It makes me a bit sad, too, to know that soon all the MUP's and bike lanes could be clogged up with amateurs on Trek Madone's....but we'll learn to live with it.
I'm just glad for all the negative we had to deal with yesterday, there are SOME out there who learned that they COULD ride to work safely. They take baby steps - a day or two a week here and there, maybe car-less in the future. We were all squids once.
