This is not true with my Shimano sandals. When I walk in those, you wouldn't know they were cycling shoes. The cleat is pretty well recessed.
I used mine with Speedplay Frog and Shimano SPD cleats. In both cases I could hear my cleats on the hard surface, and could see the effects on the cleats afterwards.
Others may know more though.
