The notion that someone starting or starting back into cycling can go out and buy just the right bike is a dubious one. Even the P guy probably went through a few bikes before he found his ideal choices. Personally I would suggest he go for the free Pinarello, and buy the $1000 bike a year or two down the line, since his notions of what he wants and his riding ability and preferred posture will have matured by then.
