Sure you can function in daily life without grammar, but it shows that you don't pay attention to detail, that you didn't try hard in school, and therefore probably don't try hard in other things. Yes, this is a generalization, but when you're looking at a pile of hundreds of applications you'll make the generalizations on 50 and not worry about the one that slipped through the cracks. Life is the hardest lesson you'll ever learn.
