According to Sheldon Brown, it is possible to use a 9-speed Dura Ace rear derailleur with 8-speed Dura Ace shifters, if one uses the "alternative cable routing." I'd like to do this, but I can't find where he says which chain I need to use (8- or 9-speed). Will a 9-speed Dura Ace rear derailleur work with an 8-speed chain?
