Many bikes in the eighties had a little device on the down tube that flicks down and locks the front wheel. I think they're called "flickstands." Of course, you still have to lean it against something.

I always like kickstands, myself.

Not on a racing bike, of course. But then I don't have a racing bike, so I don't worry about being seen with a kickstand.
